* * This large 30x39” late 19th century oil on canvas of a still life of flowers, vases, basket, & pedestals by listed artist Goddard Frederick Gale (1858 - 1938). It looks like it was once part of a large Western Victorian home or hotel. Condition is good. I think the canvas could use a cleaning, which I believe would really make this pop in your San Francisco or Marin County manse. The painting was purchased from a Long Beach, California estate.

Goddard Gale began his art career in England, where he was born in 1857. He was known to have studied there before moving to America, and settling in San Francisco and then Oakland, California. While living in California, Gale focused on local subjects for his art. He often used the San Francisco Bay and the Carmel coast for inspiration in his work primarily as a painter. He was a member of the Bay Region Art Association and died in Oakland, California in 1938, recognized as a contributor to the local art scene before his death. Gale had studied art and won recognition in England before immigrating to California in 1895. He lived in San Francisco until 1902 and then moved across the bay to Oakland where he remained. He was active in the local art scene until shortly before his death on Aug. 12, 1938. Member: Bay Region AA.
